When you visit an osteopath for the first time, a full medical history will be taken. This allows your osteopath to consider what may have happened in the past that has led to the problems that you are now experiencing, and also to start to form a diagnosis.
Following this, they will perform an examination, which may include observing your ability to perform a series of movements to assess your mobility, assessing your range of movement as they move you, and other specialist examination techniques to help develop a diagnosis.
The results of the assessment will be considered alongside your lifestyle, so that a full diagnosis and suitable treatment plan can be formulated.
For the purpose of assessing the body as a whole, you may be asked to undress down to your underwear or suitable clothing. If you wish a modesty gown (similar to a hospital gown) is available, this allows your osteopath to assess your body whilst ensuring you feel comfortable. If you would like a family member or friend to accompany you during your consultation and treatment they are very welcome.
The initial consultation lasts about 45 minutes, and following consultations last about 30 minutes.
